For this reason our retreat is held in the Maya K’iche’ town of Chichicastenango, where the culture is alive, the ancient practices are 'lived & breathed' on a daily basis, here you will get a direct glimpse into the raw & true Mayan traditions.

Our Chichicastenango retreat will last 5 days with several profound and ancient Mayan activities to be experienced. Each group will have limited spots so that the participants joining can receive the full attention of our Spiritual Leaders.

    MORNING: You will be welcomed by Tata Juan & Tata Miguel. Followed by a workshop about the Maya Geo-Cosmovision

    AFTERNOON: Group Kotzij’ at a Mayan altar guided by Tata Juan & Tata Miguel (Ajq’ijab’) & Nana Sandra & Tata Pox (revered elders).

  • Wednesday

    MORNING: One-on-one cleansing with a Mayan spiritual leader.

    AFTERNOON: Cacao Kotzij’

  • THURSDAY

    Break & Opportunity to visit the famous Chichicastenango market

YOUR TEACHERS

You will learn directly from teachers and Ajq’ijab’ (Maya Spiritual Leaders) & Major Elders who are normally inaccessible to the general public.

We are extremely honored that we will have the opportunity to work with Major Elders in this retreat, who are considered to be the wisest Maya guides of a Community. They are older in age and teachers to the community's spiritual leaders. They are the ones that the Maya spiritual leaders go to for their cleansings, guidance, & advice.

  • Tata Juan expert in transmuting negative energy.

    Tata Juan

    Juan & Miguel are twins from Chichicastenango! Juan specializes in the path of the Mayan underworld. Which means he is an expert in transmuting negative energy to help people heal from the toughest illnesses and blockages.

  • Tata Miguel a mayan spiritual elder.

    Tata Miguel

    Juan & Miguel are twins from Chichicastenango! Miguel follows the path of the Mayan upperworld and specializes in healing people through the teachings of the sacred Cholq'ij. He is known in his community for healing babies and children.

  • Tata Pox, healer and mayan elder.

    Tata Pox

    Pox is a well respected Major Elder, this means he has been given the highest position a spiritual leader can be given in a community. Major Elders are usually the healers & teachers of the younger spiritual leaders. In addition to this, he is also a traditional Mayan “huesero” or bone doctor. Meaning he specializes in the healing of the muscles & bones. 

  • Nana Sandra smoking tobacco teacher.

    Nana Sandra

    Sandra is also considered to be a Major Elder in her community. She specializes in the art of smoking tobacco for healing. Considered to be one of the strongest “tabaqueras” or tobacco healers in her community. She treats illnesses & can read the tobacco in order to see deep inside her patients through these readings.

WHAT's INCLUDED

Authentic Teachers: The guides are traditional Maya K’iche’ spiritual leaders with decades of training. Two of them are so revered, that in their communities they are considered to be the teachers and healers of the Maya spiritual leaders. 

4 Kotzij’ (Ceremonies): Two group kotzij’ (ceremonies), one ceremonial cacao drinking kotzij’, one ancestral healing group practice. 

2 One-on-One Cleansings: You will experience two one-on-one cleansings with a spiritual leader, that will include eggs and tobacco. 

Access to Mayan sites: All of the spiritual practices will happen at ancient Mayan sites, including Pasucal Ab’aj, one of Guatemala’s most famous ancient altars.

Welcome Gift Bag: Get surprised with a gift bag full of traditional Mayan goodies that you can use during your stay + take back home. 

Lodging: 5 nights in a private room in one of the best hotels of Chichicastenango.

Food: All breakfasts are included + a welcome dinner.

TRANSPORT OPTIONS

Chichicastenango is not easy to access, so we will help by picking you up and dropping you off at very accessible destinations in Guatemala. There will be two (optional) shuttles scheduled that are included in the retreat price*:

- One on arrival from Antigua Guatemala to Chichicastenango on Monday afternoon.

- One on return from Chichicastenango to Lake Atitlán on Saturday afternoon.

*There is only ONE shuttle scheduled for the arrival and ONE for departure, if you are unable to catch the scheduled shuttle then you must arrange your own transport.

WHAT TO EXPECT

OUR RETREATS ARE UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE AVAILABLE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. WHILE THIS EXPERIENCE IS NO WALK IN THE PARK, ITS VALUE IS TRULY PRICELESS.

There is a concept of the Maya called 'Mejelem Xukulem.'

Mejelem directly translates to reverence, it shows our deep respect for the energies.

Xukulem directly translates to kneel. This is because we kneel before the energies in gratitude & respect during a ceremony.

The Mayans believe that when doing a Kotzij’ (ceremony) or any other spiritual practice, one must show up with the attitude & reverence of Mejelem Xukulem. These practices date back thousands of years. And in order to get to the Mayan altars & prepare for these sacred practices one usually goes through a certain level of “sacrifice” & “discomfort”, in the sense that a person usually brings many offerings, carries them through the forests, caves, & mountains. 

Oftentimes the practices are emotional, long & even exhausting. Yet, it is by doing it this way that one gets the deepest possible experience & transformation. The Mayans believe that it is this state of reverence, sacrifice & priority that one gives to the practice that makes us enter a profound state of gratitude as we sit in front of the sacred fire by the ancient altars. For this reason, our aim in this retreat is not comfort, but Mejelem Xukulem.

    CHICHICASTENANGO IS NOT A TOURIST DESTINATION

    We will put you into the best hotels, yet they might not be up to a European/American standard of comfort and convenience.

    FOOD OPTIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE, BUT LIMITED

    While you will be able to find choices for vegan, gluten-free & other dietary restrictions, they will be very limited. Please note, that if you have a food allergy, the local restaurants may not be able to safely accommodate you.

  • GUATEMALA IS A DEVELOPING COUNTRY

    Chichicastenango is a truly average Guatemalan town. This means you can expect unorganized traffic, noise, bad roads for walking & driving, street dogs/cats, other culturally challenging & surprising things.

    POVERTY IS VERY PRESENT

    It is important to be mentally prepared to face the true situation of this country. It is worth noting that Chichicastenango is known to be a relatively safe town. And we will tell you how to move around in case you want to go out by yourself.
